The KnoxBox Emergency Access Key box provides access to emergency services personnel in emergency situations. Once the Key box is in place the keyholder places a key or door code inside the key box and only emergency personnel will have access to the box. Whether you suffer a medical event and can’t get to the door to unlock it or your fire alarm is going off while you’re away; The KnoxBox allows undelayed access and will save your home or business from damage in order for us to gain access to your home or business when minutes count. The Key Box program has been around for nearly a decade in Grand Isle County, and is already in use in our Schools, some public buildings and private businesses.
Residential Knox Boxes
South Hero Volunteer Fire Department is proud to be able to provide temporary key boxes to our residents*.
Who is this Loaner program for?
This program is to provide short-term emergency access to homes for people who have an existing medical condition that is likely to result in 911 call.
How are they attached?
These temporary boxes have a steel door hanger hook, slipping over the top of your door like a wreath hanger.
Who has Access?
The KnoxBox program is run through the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriffs and All Grand Isle County Fire and Rescue Departments have keys to the box. With the Knoxbox program, the Homeowners / Businesses do not have keys to the box. Someone from Fire, Rescue, or Sheriffs department will lock your house key (or code/fob) in the box for you.

What are the Costs?
SHVFD will cover all costs providing the key box is returned in good working order, with normal wear and tear.
How Long can I Loan a Keybox?
The Default term is 6 months, and can be renewed once. For periods longer than a year, we encourage you to purchase your own Key Box. Exceptions may also be made.
*Keybox availability may vary, and is not guaranteed. SHVFD will make all reasonable efforts to provide keyboxes to those in need.
