Warning from South Hero Volunteer Fire Department: Stay off the ice
The South Hero Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report that an ATV broke through the ice on Keeler Bay with two people on board. The incident was initially reported to 911 at 7:02 am.
Initially responding to the scene were South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, Isle LaMotte, and Alburgh fire departments, South Hero Rescue, and the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department. Milton Rescue responded with a second ambulance. As is the procedure in ice related emergencies, ice rescue technicians from South Hero, Grand Isle, and North Hero deployed from the Keeler Bay access along with the North Hero airboat.
Also responding to the scene were the Vermont State Police, Vermont Fish and Wildlife, and the Colchester Technical Rescue who supplied divers.
The Vermont State Police will issue a press release on the incident later today. SHVFD will make no further comment beyond the initial response.
Ice conditions vary widely due to warmer temperatures. The public is advised to stay off the lake and bay ice. Be advised also that the Ice Fishing Derby planned for this weekend is cancelled.
